Our annual team awards were extremely hard to figure out this year. I met with staff and we came up with 5-6 names for each award. The follow is our team awards for the 2008-2009 Season.
C. D. Reddish Memorial Award
Awarded to the graduating senior or upper classman who has contributed the most to the team, not only in results, per se, but with respect to community relations and promoting the sport as a diplomatic ambassador
The CD Reddish Award is a fun award to give out. It goes to the heart of the team. This years recipient goes to an athlete that was worth more to this team that we probably realize. Some one whos name is synonomys with “Great Guy”. This years recipient of the CD Reddish award, former Alf Engen Award winner, and last years recipient of the CD Reddish Award, Senior, local hero by way of Massachusets…Scott Veenis!
David Novelle Outstanding Skier Award
Awarded to the male athlete who has been one of the most influential factors to the success of our team with outstanding results through the entire competitive season
This award was a tight race. Since the wording of this award suggests best skier through the season, we used the regular season MVP standings to determine recipient. MVP standings are based on total points an athlete won for a team, through the full RMISA season. This year we had two men who finished fourth overall in RMISA, and we would like to recognize them as the 2009 recipients of the David Novelle Outstanding Skier Award. Thomas Zumbrunn 4th in Alpine, and Didrik Smith 4th in Nordic.
Toril Forland Outstanding Skier Award
Awarded to the female athlete who has been an important factor to the success and accomplishments of the Women’s Ski Team programs
This award was tough to figure out as well. With a Womens Alpine squad at NCAAs that was second to only UNH, we were not short on talent. But this women needs to be recognized for what she did on the snow. A win in Alaska, and two All American Finishes in Maine. Our repeat recipient of the Toril Forland Award goes to Eva Huckova.
Alf Engen Sportsmanship Award
Awarded to the outstanding athlete in either their junior or senior year on the team who has best demonstrated the most inspirational qualities. This award takes into consideration outstanding competitive achievement as well as noteworthy leadership and sportsmanship.
Our final team award, like the others were very tough to decide on. With such a talented team, inspirational moments, and strong leadership, this award was tough to figure out. But ultimately, this student athlete is something special. This guy has shown us all how to hurt in training and in racing.
Probably the most physically talented athlete I have had the opportunity to coach has also been the easiest to work with and help get to peak fitness.
With many exciting wins in his three year career with the Utes, I am very proud to have worked with this athlete. But more proud that ever to hear he is putting his elbow to the wheel and continuing to race.
I would like you to help me recognize the 2009 recipient of the Alf Engen Award; Senior, Even Sletten.
